PyRSSNews
PyRSSNews is an RSS news feed reader designed in Python for use on the Xbox games console platform. It is designed to work from within the scripts section of the Xbox Media Centre application.
Overview
Xbox Media Centre does no currently have any news reader software installed. This application was written primarily to satisfy that area and to provide a source for development for future applications. Usage, reuse and hacking around of this application is generally encouraged.
With a good deal of RSS readers available it was surprising to find a lack of them readily available for the Xbox platform. This may change in the future.
It is noted that many people have an online news reading account registered with Bloglines. There is currently an Xbox Python script available although it has not been tested by No-Clutter.
So if there is a Bloglines script then why produce another reader?
Well, Bloglines a great service but if you do not have a Bloglines account then it is useless to use it. PyRSSNews is a login free application.
Features
PyRSSNews uses an XML file to store the name and feed URL for a particular RSS channel. From this file and interactive menu system is automatically built.
Feed titles are displayed in a scrollable items box and upon selection further data is shown.
Known Issues
No caching as yet which means that this acts as a greedy feed reader. As such some sites may temporarily impose a ban on the IP requesting the feed.
Future features
The current release is an initial alpha setup of the system and works. However, future releases will have further enhancements added.
Version 0.11
- Image RSS feeds - for example the Daily Dilbert
Version 0.2
- Caching of RSS feed - to therefore be bandwidth friendly to websites
- User defined update frequency
Acknowledgements
The application uses the feedparser library to access pre-specified RSS feeds.
